Women's Tennis Drops Close Match to Marshall, 4-3

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – On the road for the first time this spring, the University of Pennsylvania women’s tennis team led 1-0 over Marshall after doubles play, before falling to The Herd, 4-3, Saturday afternoon at Penn State.

Penn (2-3) playing the first of its two matches this weekend, saw its top two doubles combinations win to start the match. The duo of Sol Eskenazi and Kana Daniel won 8-5, while Sonya Latycheva and Jaime Yapp-Shing won in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (1).

In singles play, Eskenazi and Daniel continued their streak of impressive play at the top of the Quakers’ lineup. Eskenazi dispatched of Marshall’s Dana Oppinger 6-0, 6-2, while Daniel defeated Derya Turhan 6-2, 6-4.

Marshall (5-2) was able to take the remaining four singles matches to pull out the victory over the Quakers.

Playing in the fourth position, Penn senior Yapp-Shing retired after one game in her second set of singles play.

The Quakers will play host Penn State Sunday afternoon at 12 p.m. The 57th-ranked Nittany Lions were defeated on Friday by Marshall, 4-3.
