PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania women’s rowing team had a dominant start to its spring season last Saturday, defeating Saint Joseph’s and George Washington in four races on the Schuylkill River. This Saturday, the Quakers row into their first Cup races of 2014, traveling to Yale for the annual Connell Cup with the host Bulldogs and Columbia.
The Connell Cup has been contested annually since 1975. Yale has dominated the varsity 8 race over the years; however, last year Columbia stunned the Bulldogs by five seconds for its first win in this race.
Yale enters the weekend ranked seventh in the CRCA national coaches poll. Penn and Columbia are among several programs receiving votes in the rankings.
“We are really excited to get our Ivy League season started,” said Penn’s head coach, Mike Lane. “Racing in our league is so competitive, getting out and testing our speed on the water is what we live to do!
“We had a great weekend last week, and plan to build on our strengths and work on our weaknesses as we head into this weekend,” he continued. “I am excited to see what our kids accomplish on Saturday. The competition will be outstanding.”
