PHILADELPHIA – Facing difficult weather conditions in the opening races of the Pennsylvania Invitational on the Schuylkill River, the University of Pennsylvania men’s heavyweights swept Drexel in all four races run on Friday afternoon.

With a headwind reaching 18-22 miles per hour, and gusting even higher, Penn’s varsity 8 finished the 2,000-meter course in 7:02.7 while Drexel could not complete the course, having to stop and bail water with 700 meters to go in the race.

The Quakers' second varsity 8 finished a full 10 seconds ahead of Drexel in 6:56.5, the best time on the day. The third varsity 8 race saw Penn ahead by 14 seconds, clocking 7:10.2, and the freshmen had little trouble in besting the Dragons, finishing in 7:19.6, 22.1 seconds in front of the Dragons.

After battling whitecap conditions in the opener, Penn will look for calmer waters -- despite anticipated rain -- when it takes on Northeastern in the Burk Cup and George Washington in the McCausland Cup Saturday afternoon to wrap up the Pennsylvania Invitational.
