PHILADELPHIA - A longtime Ivy League rivalry continues on Saturday when the University of Pennsylvania lightweights take on No. 5 Princeton for the rights to the Wood-Hammond Cup. No. 11 Georgetown will join No. 10 Penn and the Tigers on Lake Carnegie with races beginning at 10:30 a.m.

This is the 69th Wood-Hammond Cup race between these rivals, dating back to 1941. Princeton has claimed the last eight and leads with 57 overall wins. Penn last claimed the Wood-Hammond Cup in 2005 with a victory on the Schuylkill River. Georgetown has now competed as a guest in this race in eight of the last 10 years.

Last year, the varsity finished second in the Wood-Hammond Cup race, while the fours and top-ranked freshmen posted wins for the Penn lightweights. The Quakers earned open-water wins in both victories, while the Tigers maintained possession of the cup with a six-second win over the Quakers. A tight race at the start, Princeton found some seperation and won with a time of 5:32.4. Georgetown, a guest in the race, finished a distant third.

Last week, Penn claimed victory in a wild freshman race and finished third to the top two teams in the nation in the battle for the Dodge Cup on the Housatonic River. The Quakers showed some impressive resiliency after a collision in the freshman race. Yale veered into the Penn boat and then jumped out ahead of the Quakers, but Penn regrouped and caught the Bulldogs to pull out the win. In the Dodge Cup race, Yale and Columbia's varsity boats rank first and second in the country, respectively, and finished in that order.

A full recap of the Wood-Hammond Cup races can be found at PennAthletics.com following the conclusion of the day's events.
