PHILADELPHIA – Penn will begin the 2014 men’s soccer season as defending Ivy League champions and seven newcomers will join the Quakers as members of the Class of 2018 head coach Rudy Fuller announced.

“Our coaching staff is very pleased with the talent and depth of this class,” Fuller said. “It is a well-balanced group that fills all of the needs we identified at the start of the process. I want to acknowledge the work of my two assistants, Rob Irvine and Pete Pososki, in putting this group together. They did a phenomenal job throughout the recruiting cycle, early and late, to identify this class. These young men are eager to don the Red & Blue and build upon our program's rich history and tradition of success. I am confident that we have assembled a class that will make the greater Penn Soccer community proud in the years ahead."

The group is comprised of seven student-athletes from six different states and features four midfielders and three defenders.

Coach Fuller on Chris Scian: "Chris joins our program from the PDA Academy coached by Sam Nellins.  The recruiting process with Chris went very quick, but we were ecstatic when he committed his future to our program.  He is a technical attacking player that can beat you off the dribble, pass, or service.  He has an air of confidence about him in the attacking half of the field and is constantly looking for ways to unlock the opponent and help his team get to goal.  I think he will see time in a number of different spots for us in the year ahead, and I am confident he will make a positive impact on our team's attack."

Coach Fuller on Sam Wancowicz: "Sam continues a long line of Baltimore players that have joined our program recently.  He comes to Penn from the Baltimore Celtic Soccer Club (formally the Baltimore Casa Mia Bays Academy) coached by Steve Nichols and Brandon Quaranta.  Sam is a natural leader with an incredible winning mentality.  He is one of the best natural defenders I have ever seen.  He is strong, athletic, and extremely competitive.  Sam will challenge to fill the void created by the graduation of last season's captain and All-Ivy League First Team performer, Jonny Dolezal.  They are big shoes to fill, but I am convinced that Sam has what it takes to be successful."
