ITHACA, N.Y. - In the final dual of the season, the No. 14 Penn heavyweights could not reclaim the Madeira Cup from No. 9 Cornell on the Cayuga Inlet Friday morning.
In the 59th installment of the Madeira Cup, the Quakers were edged by the Big Red, who reached the Grand Final at EARC Sprints less than a week ago. Cornell won on its home course with a time of 5:51.2, while Penn clocked out at 5:55.8.
The second varsity posed the closest finish of the day, but the hosts claimed victory by about a length. Cornell hit the finish in 5:50.1, while the Quakers were just a few strokes behind at 5:53.5.
The Big Red were also tops over the Red and Blue in the third varsity race. Cornell finished in 5:57.2 and Penn's boat crossed the finish in 6:07.8. It was a similar finish in the fours as Cornell held about a 10-second advantage. The Big Red finished in 7:01.3 to Penn's 7:11.7. Penn's freshman finished in 6:19.3, but were also second to Cornell at 5:59.9.
Next up, the Quakers will head to the IRA Championships in Mercer, N.J. from May 30-June 1.
