PHILADELPHIA – On July 24, world-renowned fitness expert and creator of the P90X workout Tony Horton was in Philadelphia to receive the Chevalier Jackson Healthcare Innovator Award from Penn Medicine. During his visit to Philadelphia, he took time to tour Penn’s athletic and recreation facilities and put members of the Penn Athletics staff through a workout.

Penn Medicine’s Chevalier Jackson Award was presented by the Department of Otorhinolaryngology to “recognize his notable contributions in both developing and popularizing scientifically-based exercise regimes which have significantly impacted the obesity epidemic and overall public health and fitness.”

Eric Laudano, Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Performance and Head Athletic Trainer at Penn, and Chris Bosch, Associate Director of Recreation for Campus Programs, attended a Q&A panel with Horton and Dr. Gregory Weinstein, Vice-Chair of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, and then took Tony and his assistant, Shawna, on a guided tour of Penn’s recreation and athletic facilities, including Franklin Field, The Palestra, Penn Park, Tse Ping & Cheng Cheung Sports Center and the David Pottruck Health and Fitness Center.

On Friday morning, Horton led Laudano and Bosch in a 90-minute workout at Pottruck centered around Horton’s “Boxes and Balls” workout which focuses on plyometric and instability training.

"This was a tremendous opportunity to lay the foundation of the future of holistic wellness for our students and student-athletes at Penn,” Laudano said. “By involving both divisions of Recreation and Sports Performance, it allowed us to come together and learn from one of the greatest modern day leaders of health and wellness. We are grateful for the opportunity to spend two days with Tony Horton, and both Chris and myself are eager to increase our interaction as Division leaders to create a more innovative and interactive dynamic between Recreation and Sports Performance. This was an inspiring two days and will hopefully lead to exciting times ahead for health and wellness in DRIA."

Bosch concurred with Laudano’s statements.

“Tony Horton came, saw and ‘X’d’ Penn Medicine, Recreation and Athletics like only the Fitness Guru knows how – by bringing it,” Bosch said. “What an experience for Eric and myself! In the two days spent with Tony we were most impressed with his humble and genuine disposition. Tony has inspired millions of individuals worldwide to make positive changes with their health and well-being, and Eric and I were appreciative to share in this one of a kind experience to cultivate a new friendship between DRIA and one of the world’s most motivational fitness leaders. We hope to grow the relationship and provide an engaging experience to the Penn Community with the exciting future ahead in Recreation and Athletics.”
