SUWON, Korea – Five Quakers from the University of Pennsylvania men’s and women’s fencing teams journeyed to Korea and competed in the fourth Korea-USA Elite Fencing Invitational (KUEFI) from July 8 to July 10.

Held at the Suwon Sports Complex in Suwon, Korea, junior R.J. Shipp (Men’s Epee), senior Sean Turner (Men’s Sabre), junior Shaul Gordon (Men’s Sabre), sophomore Cassidy Seidl (Women’s Foil), and sophomore Shriya Joshi (Women’s Sabre) represented the Red and Blue at the invitational and were led by head fencing coach Andy Ma. This summer was Ma’s third visit to Korea for KUEFI.

Penn’s top finisher at the invitational was Gordon, who advanced to the finals where he fell to Jun Yong So from Daejeon University. Elsewhere, Shipp finished seventh in Men’s Epee and Turner took eighth in Men’s Sabre.

Along with individual competition, Gordon and Shipp represented Team USA (US colleges) in the Men’s Team Competition versus Team Korea. Both Quakers contributed crucial points in the relay-style match to helped Team USA win, 15-11.

As for the women, Joshi placed sixth overall in Women’s Sabre, while Seidl finished 11th in Women’s Foil.
