PHILADELPHIA - Welcome to the first Penn wrestling "Rankings Round-Up" - a weekly look at the major rankings in the world of collegiate wrestling and where the Quakers factor in.

Much like college basketball and football, there are multiple rankings that exist in collegiate wrestling. Each week, PennAthletics.com will take a look at just where the Quakers fall in the NCAA Coaches' panel, InterMat rankings, the Amateur Wrestling News (A.W.N.) polls and the EIWA conference rankings.

As announced last week, Penn had seven wrestlers featured in the first NCAA coaches' panel of the season. In the coaches' panel, the top-33 wrestlers at each weight class are ranked based on a wrestler's winning percentage, a wrestler's rating percentage index (RPI) and a coaches' poll. At the conclusion of the third NCAA coaches' panel, the number of automatic qualifying spots at a given weight for each conference will be determined. Who picks up those AQs is then decided on the mat at the conference championships with at-large selections announced at a later date. While inclusion in this ranking doesn't guarantee a grappler a spot in the starting grid at the NCAA Championships in Omaha this March, it does keep them in line for one as long as he continues to perform at the level done so in the early stages of the season.

The InterMat and A.W.N rankings are two of the more prominent media polls released each week throughout the season. Five Penn wrestlers are ranked in this week's InterMat polls - up from four last week. The Quakers feature three wrestler's in the A.W.N polls this week.

The EIWA rankings are compiled by a vote of four of the conference's coaches throughout the season. The top six at each weight are ranked as well as the top eight teams. Penn has six wrestlers in the EIWA rankings this period, as well as a seventh-place slotting as a team.

165 lbs. - No. 20 Gabriel Burak
174 lbs. - No. 20 Scott Giffin
197 lbs. - No. 20 Micah Burak

Did You Know?
Penn's seven wrestlers featured in the top 33 are the third most of the 13 EIWA schools. Two teams ranked in the top 10 - No. 6 Cornell and No. 8 Lehigh - each have eight wrestlers in the first coaches' panel.

Penn in the InterMat Rankings (Released 1/26)
Rankings go to 20 at each weight
149 lbs. - No. 9 Cesar Grajales (Last week - No. 9)
157 lbs. - No. 15 Matt Dragon (Last week - No. 16)
165 lbs. - No. 19 Gabriel Burak (Last week - No. 20)
174 lbs. - No. 20 Scott Giffin (Last week - not ranked)
197 lbs. - No. 18 Micah Burak (Last week - No. 19)

Did You Know?
No. 18 Micah Burak has faced the most wrestlers at his weight in this week's polls with six matches against grapplers in the top 20. He has one win over No. 19 Brent Jones of Virginia. Three of those matches have ended in a one-point loss and another in a two-point loss in the second period of sudden victory.

Penn in the A.W.N. Polls (Released 1/26)
Rankings go to 20 at each weight
149 lbs. - No. 13 Cesar Grajales (Last week - No. 13)
174 lbs. - No. 12 Scott Giffin (Last week - No. 13)
197 lbs. - No. 19 Micah Burak (Last week - No. 19)

Did You Know?
If No. 12 Scott Giffin doesn't find himself at the top of the podium at this weight class in Omaha this March, it is a good bet that the wrestler in that position is someone who had to go through Giffin at one point. Two of the top-six wrestlers (No. 3 Christopher Henrich of UVA and No. 6 Mike Letts of Maryland) at this weight have already wrestled Giffin this season and a match with No. 2 Mack Lewnes of Cornell is on the horizon. Lewnes will be best served to ask Henrich and Letts for pointers as both had trouble with Penn's junior tri-captain, pulling out narrow decisions.

Did You Know?
Seeding at the EIWA Championships this March will be very important as wrestlers vie for an automatic qualifying spot at NCAAs. While Penn is only featured at six weights right now, the Red and Blue have six duals with EIWA rivals to finish the regular season. Those in the middle of the top six at the moment will have ample opportunity to solidify high seeding and wrestlers like Mark Rappo (125) and Cesar Grajales (149) who are on the bubble at the moment should move up by piling up conference wins. For Rappo, the Brown/Harvard duals on Feb. 6 will be a big step toward moving up as he will take on No. 4 Greg Einfrank of Brown and No. 6 Steven Keith of Harvard.
