PHILADELPHIA - In their final race on the Schuylkill River, the University of Pennsylvania lightweight rowing team topped M.I.T. in the varsity 8 race to cap the careers of Penn's senior class. Earlier in the day, the Quakers were beaten out by Navy for the Callow Cup.
On a chilly Senior Day, the Quakers finished on top. In fact, Penn had two boats in the varsity 8 race that finished ahead of M.I.T. The first varsity won handily in a time of 6:21.5. It was the second varsity that was in a tight race with M.I.T.'s top boat. But the Quakers second boat finished a few seats better than the Engineers. Penn came in at 6:31.6 and M.I.T. was at 6:33.7.
Penn's freshman boat had similar success against M.I.T. It was a close race, but the Quakers edged out the win by a little more than a second. The winning time was 6:21.9 and M.I.T. finished in 6:23.5.
Later in the day, in the Callow Cup race, the Red and Blue finished eight seconds behind Navy. The Midshipmen kept the cup in Annapolis, Md., with a winning time of 6:01.1. It was an open water victory as Penn finished the 2,000-meter course with a time of 6:09.5.
Navy swept the other three races during the morning regatta. Each was in similar fashion to the cup race. The second varsity finished in 6:09.1 for the Midshipmen, while the Quakers came across the finish at 6:25.3. The visitors won the third varsity race by a similar margin. Navy won with a mark of 6:16.1 and the Quakers stopped the clock at 6:33.3.
Penn's freshman topped Navy's second freshman boat and were close with the Midshipmen's top boat. However, Navy pulled out the victory at 6:06.9. Penn was the runner up at 6:15.5, which was 12 seconds better than Navy's second boat.
Saturday's action also marked the final regatta of the regular season for the Quakers. Up next is Eastern Sprints in Worcester, Mass., on Sunday, May 13.
