Heavyweights Post Best EARC Sprints Finish Since 2007

WORCESTER, Mass. - Looking to continue its climb back to the upper echelon of heavyweight rowing programs, Penn put together its best finish at the EARC Sprints in head coach Greg Myhr's tenure, finishing 11th in the varsity eight after a fifth-place finish in an extremely-competitive Petite Final. All six boats in the Petite Final were within 3.9 seconds of each other, Penn finishing in 6:00.413, just behind Cornell (6:00.209) for fourth. Boston University was first in the Petite Final in a time of 5:57.133.

The Quakers put together their best performance in the Varsity Eight since 2007, reaching the Petite Final for the first time since the '07 regatta. Penn finished fourth in the fastest heat of the varsity eight, overtaking a Columbia crew which had defeated the Quakers the last time they had competed against each other. That one spot advanced the Quakers to the Petite final, where Penn finished 5th for an overall finish of 11th in the Varsity Eight race. Overall, Penn's finish of 11th is its highest since 2008 when Penn ended the EARC Sprints in 10th place.

The future looks bright for Penn as the frosh eight scored a win in the Third Final, defeating yearly foes Georgetown and George Washington among other teams. The freshmen were .8 seconds away from advancing to the Petite Final after a fast heat in the morning, and rebounded nicely to pull away by nearly three seconds to win the Third Final.

The Quakers will get another crack at Cornell in their next regatta, when the Red and Blue head to Ithaca for the Madeira Cup on May 25.
