NEWPORT, R.I. - The Penn men's golf team was in third place after Monday's first round at the Adams Cup of Newport, but struggled with Monday's second round and Tuesday's final round and ended up in eighth place out of 12 teams.

The 54-hole tournament was played at the par-70 Newport Country Club on Monday, and the par-71 Carnegie Abbey on Tuesday.

Penn shot 289 as a team in Monday's opening round, just nine over par, which put them three strokes behind co-leaders UCF and Yale. Monday's second round was a different story, however, as the Quakers' ballooned to a 312 in blustery weather. That continued Tuesday at Carnegie Abbey, where Penn shot 311.

UCF ended up as the team champion for the second year in a row, shooting 866 over the three rounds to defeat Yale by a stroke.

Penn's low scorer actually turned out to be the man playing in the event as an individual, sophomore Ben Cooley. He carded 76-69-74--219 which tied him for seventh place in the field of 68 golfers. Junior Max Marsico was Penn's low scorer in the lineup; he shot a first-round 67, but followed up with 78 and 76 for a 221 total that tied him for 11th in the field.

Sophomore Austin Powell carded 73-77-79--229 to tie for 33rd overall, while freshman P.J. Collier shot 72-81-78--231 and finished tied for 36th. Senior captain P.J. Fielding was Penn's final scorer, tying for 45th overall with a score of 77-78-78--233. Freshman Patrick O'Leary scored in the second round for the Quakers and ended the tournament at 79-79-83--241, placing 61st.

Yale took the top two individual spots, as Sam Bernstein shot an even-par 69-71-71--211 to defeat teammate Joe Willis by three strokes.

The men are back in action Monday, hosting the Rehoboth Beach (Del.) Fall Invitational.
