PHILADELPHIA - Always circled on the calendar, its Head of the Charles weekend for the University of Pennsylvania lightweights. The Quakers will compete in one of the world's most prestigious regattas on Sunday on the Charles River.
This year, the Quakers will be sending two boats to compete, both racing on Sunday afternoon. The Lightweight 4 are up first and are scheduled to begin at 4:15 p.m. Following the Lightweight 4 race, the Lightweight 8 will hit the water at 4:38 p.m.
Last year, Penn's two races were also in the final hour of the second day. The fours had no problem with the wait as they finished fourth among collegiate teams and sixth overall among the 22 boats. In the eights, Penn was eighth among college boats. The Quakers finished the challenging course in a time of 15:26.65. Overall, the Red and Blue were 10th among the 17 competitors.
Penn is coming off an impressive season debut at the Navy Day Regatta on the Schuylkill River last Saturday. The Quakers posted wins in the Freshman 8+ and Freshman fours. In the varsity 8 race, the Quakers finished third. The Red and Blue oarsmen were well ahead of the rest of the field and finished close behind Navy and Delaware.
