State College, Pa. - Though it is early on in the season, it's safe to say that the Penn women's fencing foil team is in capable hands with Luona Wang on board. Penn's sophomore phenom picked up where she left off last season as national runner-up, becoming the first Quaker foilist to win Penn State's Garret Open since 1979.

The Garret Open, in its 41st iteration this year, has traditionally been one of the first competitions of the season for the Quakers. This year's event featured teams from Penn State, Notre Dame, Temple; and Ivy institutions such as Harvard, Princeton and Yale. The event puts fencers into an environment similar to what they will face at the NCAA Championships in March, when they are fencing as individuals rather than as a team.

Wang wasn't the only foilist to perform well on Saturday. Both Wendy Zhao and Sarah Parmacek finished among the top 10 in foil. Senior Amrit Bhinder was the best Quaker finisher in epee, closing out the day in fifth place. Gabby Foor came in 15th in epee. In saber, sophomore Laura Barger led the Red and Blue with a 15th place finish.

The men's fencing team competes tomorrow at the Garret Open, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Both the men's and women's teams return to action on Dec. 1 when they take part in the Vassar Invitational.
