PHILADELPHIA – It was a tough weekend for Penn (3-4, 0-2 Ivy) as they lost to an Ivy opponent for the second consecutive day. No. 8 Dartmouth (4-3, 1-2) topped the Quakers, 8-1 on Sunday at the Ringe Squash Courts, with Penn’s lone victory coming by way of Tyler Odell (5-2, 1-1) at No. 8.
Rotation one started with the ninth position between Daniel Judd (5-2, 0-2) and James Fisch, with Judd falling in straight games. Following Judd was Michael Mutscheller (1-6, 0-2) at No. 6 against Fletcher Pease. Mutscheller put up a strong fight in game one, but came up short, and dropped the second and third games as well, falling in straight games. John Dudzik (2-5, 0-2) faced Kyle Martino at No. 3 on the main court, and won Penn’s first game of the weekend. Dudzik dropped the next three games, though, and fell to Martino, whose plan of using his superior stamina was obvious from the start.
Derek Chilvers (2-5, 0-2) started off the second rotation at the second position against Robert Maycock on the main court, but was simply outmatched, as he fell in straight games, winning a combined five points in three games. The next match to finish was at No. 8 for the Red and Blue’s only win of the day from Odell. The freshman defeated Mark Funk in five games, winning two of three 12-10. Liam Quinn (4-3, 0-2) was inches away at No. 5 from following up Odell’s win with another, but ultimately fell in five games to Michael Mistras. Quinn won the first two games, but Mistras outmuscled the Penn freshman in the final three.
The final rotation started with captain Danny Greenberg (3-4, 0-2) against Christopher Hanson at No. 1 – Greenberg fell in straight games, 11-1, 11-4, 11-6. Despite trailing Dartmouth, 6-1, Penn still had two more matches to play. The first to finish was at No. 7 between Jack Maine (4-3, 0-2) and Alex Kurth. Maine won the first game with ease, 11-4, but dropped the next three. The final match of the day was between Augie Frank (2-5, 0-2) and Christopher Jung at the fourth position. Frank started off slow, losing the first two games without much pushback, but put up a strong fight in the final game, unfortunately losing, 10-12.
The Quakers will be back in action on Jan. 16 for a 6:00 p.m. match in Lancaster, Pa. at seventh-ranked Franklin & Marshall.
