PHILADELPHIA – Just another day in the life of Penn’s star gymnast Dana Bonincontri, as the senior started off 2013 the same way she left off when she last competed. The Bellevue, Wash. native was named ECAC Gymnast of the Week (Jan. 14), her first of the season and fifth of her career.
Bonincontri, who finished first on bars with a 9.875 – just .025 off her personal best – at the GW Invitational this past weekend, has made a habit of raking in the honors and awards from the ECAC. Last season she earned first-team All-ECAC honors in the all-around and on vault, and second-team on beam and floor, while being named ECAC Specialist of the Week on Jan. 31, 2012. As a sophomore, Bonincontri was a four-time Gymnast of the Week, first-team on beam and all-around, second-team on floor, and culminated her season by winning the ECAC Athlete of the Year award. In her rookie season, the former Washington state champion took the ECAC by storm, earning two separate Rookie of the Week awards and a Coach’s Choice of the Week award as well.
Bonincontri has a long list of accomplishments as an ECAC and Ivy Classic individual and team champion, USAG individual champion, and two-time NCAA Regional qualifier. Affectionately referred to by teammates and coaches as “Deebs,” the senior has certainly set the stage for an outstanding concluding season to her illustrious collegiate career as a Quaker.
Bonincontri and her team will be back in action for their second meet of the season when they travel to New Brunswick, N.J. for a 1 p.m. quad-meet on Jan. 19 against Rutgers, Bridgeport, and Ursinus.
