PHILADELPHIA – The Penn gymnastics team will head up the turnpike on Saturday to New Brunswick, N.J. for a 1 p.m. quad-meet hosted by Rutgers. The Quakers are heading into this meet after a fourth-place finish at the GW Invitational in their season-opener last weekend. The overall score, 189.575, is the team’s best since it began participating in the event three seasons ago. In addition, Dana Bonincontri turned in a performance that earned her ECAC Gymnast of the Week honors.
Big things will also be expected of co-captain Kirsten Strausbaugh, who finished right behind Bonincontri in the all-around last weekend, as she will look to help her team to another good performance. Hoping to contribute will be the Quaker freshmen, as well. Two members of this year’s outstanding rookie class, Carissa Lim and Elyse Shenberger, both made their debuts last weekend. Lim contributed on vault and floor, and Shenberger participated on bars, floor, and placed sixth on beam, leading off the entire meet.
The other two teams taking part in the meet are Ursinus and Bridgeport. Penn will also have dual meets with both of those teams later on in the season, including its only home match of the year, at The Palestra, against Bridgeport on Feb. 17.
