Heavyweight Rowing Sweeps Georgetown

PHILADELPHIA – It was a clean sweep for heavyweight rowing in its spring debut, the Red and Blue winning all three races in a regatta against Georgetown on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J.
In the Varsity Eight, Penn was 2.1 seconds clear of the Hoyas, crossing in a time of 5:48.3 to pick up their first win of the season. The Second Varsity had copious amounts of open water between them and the Hoyas, clearing Georgetown’s second eight by 19.3 seconds with a winning time of 6:02.7 to Georgetown’s 6:22.0.
In their first collegiate dual race competition, the Frosh Eight was victorious in a time of 6:09.5. That time was 13.5 seconds ahead of Penn’s second frosh and 15.5 ahead of Georgetown’s.
A three-race series in varsity Fours between Penn and Northeaster also began on Friday, the Huskies winning the first race in a time of 7:04.9 to Penn’s 7:11.0.
The Quakers, Huskies, Hoyas and George Washington will all reconvene in Cherry Hill tomorrow for another day of racing. Penn will row Northeastern in the morning in the 34th installment of the Burk Cup, starting at 9 a.m. Penn will defend the McCausland Cup against George Washington starting at 2 p.m.
