PHILADELPHIA - Back from Spring Break in Tennessee, the University of Pennsylvania men's lightweight rowing team opens the 2013 season on Saturday in Boston where they will take to the Charles River against M.I.T.

The Quakers open the 2013 campaign at 7:40 a.m. on Saturday with the varsity fours. That race is followed by the third varsity (8 a.m.) and second varsity (8:20 a.m.), which also includes Penn's freshman boat. Then the varsity boats face off at 8:40 a.m.

Penn spent most of mid-March in Oak Ridge, Tenn., preparing for the start of the season. The Quakers weren't afforded the expected warm weather, but had plenty of practice time with perfect water conditions. Saturday will mark Penn's first competition since the Princeton Chase on Oct. 28 where the Quakers' varsity finished ninth among the 27 boats in the Varsity 8 race.

In the season opener last year, the Quakers celebrated the Fred W. Leonard boat dedication and swept the varsity and freshmen races against Delaware and Saint Joseph's on the Schuylkill River.

While in the last meeting with M.I.T., the Quakers topped the Engineers in each race on Senior Day of 2012. In fact, Penn had two boats in the varsity 8 race that finished ahead of M.I.T. The first varsity won handily in a time of 6:21.5. It was the second varsity that was in a tight race with M.I.T.'s top boat, but Penn came in at 6:31.6 and M.I.T. was at 6:33.7. The freshmen edged out the win by a little more than a second with a winning time of 6:21.9.

A full recap of this weekend's regatta can be found at PennAthletics.com following the its conclusion.
