PHILADELPHIA – The Penn men’s tennis team fell to No. 52 Princeton on Saturday afternoon by a score of 4-3, the sixth straight loss in the series to the Tigers and the third straight season that the Quakers have lost by just a point. After winning the doubles point, Princeton took the first three singles matches, clinching the victory immediately. Penn came back to win the last three matches to pull closer.

The Tigers took the 1-0 lead with dominating victories at both Nos. 1 and 3. Augie Bloom and Matt Siow were the first to wrap up, defeating Jeremy Court and Kyle Roth, 8-2. The 33rd-ranked doubles team in the nation of Zack McCourt and Matija Pecotic closed it out with an 8-2 victory of their own, taking down Nikola Kocovic and Mark Milbrandt. At No. 2, Austin Kaplan and Zach Katz suffered their first loss of the year in doubles, losing 8-5.

Moving into singles, Pecotic – the seventh-ranked player in the nation – was the first to put the finishing touches on a victory, but he was challenged. The Princeton senior came away with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Kocovic to make it a 2-0 lead for the Tigers. Matt Spindler expanded the lead at No. 3 with a 7-6, 6-0 win over Ismael Lahlou. Needing just one more point to open Ivy League play with a win, the Tigers got it at No. 6, as Jonathan Carcione won a battle of the freshmen over Penn’s Vim De Alwis, 6-4, 6-4.

The Red and Blue made things respectable by ending the day with three consecutive victories. After skipping doubles, Blaine Willenborg used fresh legs to defeat Bloom, 6-4, 6-3. Court later downed McCourt, 7-6, 6-4 in a tightly-contested battle. The final match of the day fell Penn’s way, with Katz taking home a 7-6, 0-6, 6-4 win over Dan Richardson.

Penn stays on the road next weekend, taking on Brown and Yale. The match with the Bears is set for Saturday at 2 p.m., with the Bulldogs to follow on Sunday at 2 p.m.
