PHILADELPHIA – For the first time since the 2009 IRA National Championships in Sacramento, Penn will launch into West Coast waters for the San Diego Crew Classic on Mission Bay April 6-7.

The Red and Blue will be one of six crews entered in the Men’s Collegiate Varsity Invitational race, known as the Copley Cup in Memory of David Copley. The Quakers are ranked No. 12 in the season’s first USRowing Collegiate Poll, one of four Top-20 teams entered in the regatta. In addition to Penn, No. 3 California, No. 9 Stanford and No. 19 Gonzaga are entered. Oregon State is entered in the race and sits just outside the Top 20 as the highest team receiving votes to not crack the Top-20. Rounding out the field is the University of British Columbia from just over the border in Vancouver. Last year, the Thunderbirds were the winners of the Petite Final at the San Diego Crew Classic.

This will be the first trip to the San Diego Crew Classic for the Quakers under head coach Greg Myhr. Penn enters the weekend coming off wins in two of three dual races two weekends ago on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill. The Red and Blue bested George Washington to retain the McCausland Cup, also outdistancing Georgetown to sweep the D.C. schools. This weekend’s race begins a stretch of four consecutive weekends on the water for the Quakers – three Cup races to follow.

The Copley Cup this weekend in San Diego will be contested over two days. On Saturday, two three-boat heat races will be rowed to determine lane assignments for Sunday’s Final. Penn will be in the second heat, slated for a 9 a.m. PST start with Stanford and Oregon State. Sunday’s Final is scheduled for a 9:50 a.m. PST start.
