PHILADELPHIA - The Orange Challenge Cup is going home with Syracuse after Saturday morning's races on the Schuylkill River. The Orange regained the trophy that Penn has held for the last two years with victory in four of the five races contested, most prominently the varsity eight.
In that varsity eight race, Syracuse clocked 6:27.8 over the 2,000-meter course to defeat Penn (6:32.4) by nearly five seconds and third-place Northeastern (6:35.9) by more than eight ticks.
Syracuse also won the other NCAA boats, the second varsity eight and the varsity four. In the 2V8 race, the Orange's time of 6:42.0 was well ahead of Northeastern (6:48.2) and Penn (6:50.9); in the varsity four, Syracuse (7:24.1) again clocked in with room to spare over Penn (7:33.9) and Northeastern (7:36.2).
Syracuse also won the varsity 4 B race, clocking 7:42.6 to beat two Penn boats (Penn B was timed in 7:50.0, Penn C in 8:03.1). Penn took first place in the third varsity eight, clocking 6:54.1 to defeat Syracuse (7:00.0) and Northeastern (7:09.8).
Penn also competed against Bucknell in the afternoon on the Schuylkill, falling to the Bison in the afternoon's varsity 8 race by seven-tenths of a second, 6:50.3 to 6:51.0. The Quakers swept the other three races, taking the second varsity eight race by more than 10 seconds, the varsity four by 25 seconds, and the varsity 4 B race by more than 23 seconds.
