PHILADELPHIA - A tight victory from the freshman boat got the University of Pennsylvania heavyweights off to a winning start on a sunny and windy Saturday morning on the Schuylkill River. But in the varsity race, it was Yale who edged out Columbia and the Quakers for the Blackwell Cup.

The morning began with Penn's two freshmen boats against a pair of third varsity crews from Columbia and Yale. Penn's first freshmen, along with the Bulldogs, pulled away from the field. It was a tight race to the finish as the Quakers maintained a slight edge and hit the finish in 5:33.7 - just seven-tenths before the Bulldogs.

In the battle for the Blackwell Cup, Penn was pitted against two top 10 teams. No. 8 Yale pulled out in front and eventually held an open water lead. Meanwhile, No. 16 Penn and No. 9 Columbia battled for second. The Quakers were just a few seats back, but were unable to close the deficit in time. Yale won at 5:23.4, while the Lions finished in 5:29.6 and the Red and Blue stopped the clock at 5:31.1.

Columbia claimed its only win of the day in the second varsity race. The Lions edged the Bulldogs by a second with a winning time of 5:29.4. Penn finished in 5:36.0. Yale then capped the day with a win over the Quakers in the varsity fours. The Bulldogs finished in 6:06.2 to Penn's 6:17.6.

Next Saturday, the Penn heavyweights set their sights on the Adams Cup. In the last tune up before Eastern Sprints, the Quakers will take on Harvard and Navy on the Charles River.
