PHILADELPHIA – Last year, Penn rowed to its best finish at EARC Sprints since 2007 with an 11th-place finish in the varsity eight overall after taking fifth in the Petite final. On Sunday, the Quakers will look to better that finish and prove that the Red and Blue are back among the nation’s top crews at the 2013 edition to Eastern Sprints.

The Quakers enter the weekend ranked No. 11 in the latest USRowing Collegiate poll – the highest Penn has been ranked under head coach Greg Myhr. The Red and Blue are the eight-highest ranked team among crews competing at Sprints this weekend and 15 of the 18 boats entered in the varsity eight are ranked inside the Top-20.

Penn is seeded ninth out of the 18 crews, entered in a heat with No. 5 Brown, No. 7 Princeton, No. 13 Navy, No. 20 George Washington and Holy Cross. Penn has defeated Navy and George Washington as part of its spring Cup racing and finished third in a race which featured Princeton – a race which saw the Quakers well off the pace following a run-in with a wayward high school crew warming up for a later race.

Last year, Penn was fourth in its heat before finishing fifth in the Petite Final for its highest finish since taking ninth in 2007. Penn last win at EARC Sprints came in 1998. Overall, the Quakers have won six championships at Sprints.
