NCAA Preliminary Round Schedule

PHILADELPHIAKelsey Hay, Kaci Jones, Morgan Wheeler, and Gabrielle Piper were all selected for the NCAA Championships when the fields were announced on Thursday afternoon. The four members of the University of Pennsylvania women's track and field team will compete at the NCAA East Preliminary Round, May 23-25 in Greensboro, N.C.

In each region, the top 48 marks in each event qualify for the NCAA Preliminary Rounds. Hay, Jones and Wheeler are all competing in the javelin, while Piper reached the NCAA meet in the 100-meter hurdles.

Wheeler will make her third straight NCAA appearance. She is third all-time at Penn in the javelin and finished as high as 35th at this meet in 2011. Her top throw of the year ranks her 29th heading into next weekend. It was a career-best toss of 46.26 meters (151 feet, 9 inches) at the Penn Relays.

Jones, who is in her first collegiate season, is just behind Wheeler's mark and is the 30th seed. She is also in Penn's all-time top 10 in the event with a season-best effort of 46.07 meters (151-02 ft.) at the Larry Ellis Invitational.

Hay owns Penn's top toss of the season this year which also ranks second-best in program history. The freshman earned All-Ivy honors with a second-place toss of 47.37 meters (155-05 ft.) at the Heptagonal Championships. That throw ranks 20th among the NCAA East qualifiers.

Piper just earned her sixth career All-Ivy honor with a season-best effort of 13.74 at the Heptagonal Championships. That placed her second at the meet and earned her a spot in the NCAA First Round for the first time in her career.

The NCAA Championship meet extends over two weekends in a three-week span at three different sites. The first weekend - known as the NCAA Preliminary Round - is broken up into two different sites - East (Greensboro, N.C.) and West (Austin, Texas), which host the NCAA first round and quarterfinal round in each event as well as some of the NCAA semifinals.

The top 24 finishers in the first round advance to the quarterfinals where the top 12 will advance to compete in the semifinals and finals of the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., June 5-8.

The start lists for the NCAA East Preliminary Round will be released by the NCAA on Tuesday. The meet begins Thursday in North Carolina.
