Baseball Puts Five on Summer All-Star Squads

PHILADELPHIA – Five Penn baseball players have earned All-Star nods in the summer leagues, highlighting a summer where 19 players have scattered around the country to begin preparations for the 2014 season.

On July 17, a pair of Penn players factored in the win for Team South in the Cal Ripken League All-Star Game in Bethesda, Md. Ronnie Glenn earned the win in relief, striking out a pair in a scoreless fifth inning. Shortstop Ryan Mincher went 1-for-2, driving in his team’s first run of the game. Both players are playing for the Alexandria Aces in the Cal Ripken League, a club which currently sits in third place. Mincher is hitting .312 this summer, leading the Aces with 29 hits. Glenn is 3-1 over seven starts, leading the Aces with 34 strikeouts over 41.0 innings of work.

Connor Cuff was named an All-Star in the Coastal Plains League, pitching a scoreless third inning in the East’s 3-2 win on July 8 in Hampton, Va. Cuff is pitching this summer for the Edenton (N.C.) Steamers in the CPL, and is 3-1 with a 2.73 ERA in six starts. The Steamers won the first-half championship for their division and are 26-8 overall this summer.

Mitch Montaldo was named an All-Star in the Hamptons League where he plays for league-leading West Hampton. Montaldo is tied for the Aviators’ team lead in home runs with five this summer, which ranks second among all players in the Hamptons League.

Stephen Silvestri was one of nine pitchers named to the East All-Stars in the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League where he plays for the Jersey Pilots. The ACBL All-Star Game will take place July 22 in Quakertown. Silvestri has allowed just four earned runs over 23.0 innings of work, leading the Pilots with an ERA of 1.56.

Other highlights from the summer to this point include Paul Cotler hitting .371 through 19 games for the Atwater Aviators in the Pacific Coast League. Jeff McGarry is also playing for the Aviators, hitting .287 with five homeruns while also posting a 0.90 ERA over two starts on the mound. Mitch Holtz is 5-0 for the Prospect League-leading Danville Dans. Holtz has appeared in 17 games with 15 appearances out of the bullpen to lead the team in wins. Brian Schwarzbach leads the Rochester Honkers of the Northwoods League in saves with three, appearing in 14 games.
