PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team already has a date for New Year's and it is with the Miami Hurricanes. The Quakers are set to start 2014 in Coral Gables, Fla., and will visit the Bank United Center on Jan. 1 for the program's first all-time meeting with Miami. Game time is to be determined.
This will mark Penn's first trip to the state of Florida since playing in the 1993 Lady Gator Classic where the Quakers lost to host Florida (80-49) on Dec. 28 and Ohio State (82-63) on Dec. 29. The road trip will also be a Homecoming for senior standout Alyssa Baron, who is a Miami native and attended Gulliver Prep.
Miami will be Penn's second Atlantic Coast Conference opponent of the 2013-14 season. Last week, the Quakers announced a home game with Notre Dame on Nov. 23. The Fighting Irish, who will be making their first trip to The Palestra since 1981, won the Big East regular season and conference tournament last season, but will be in their inaugural season in the ACC.
The 2012-13 Hurricanes advanced to the NCAA tournament for a school-record third consecutive season. It was also the team’s fourth straight 20-win season and on Feb. 28, Miami defeated fourth-ranked Duke for the first time in program history. The Blue Devils were the highest ranked team Miami has ever defeated, though the Canes also beat No. 6 Penn State last season.
Penn returns all five starters from the 2012-13 squad that earned the program's first-ever postseason victory and reached the semifinals of the Women's Basketball Invitational. Penn's 18 wins tied for second-most in program history and the team's nine non-league wins matched the school record set in 1999-00. Penn's 18-13 overall record marked the first winning season since 2004-05 and the team's best record since the 2000-01 team set the school standard with 22 wins.
Penn's complete 2013-14 schedule will be announced later this summer.
