PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania's field hockey team has had a strong offseason in prepping for its first year on the brand new turf at Ellen Vagelos Field. Head coach Colleen Fink is using the impending arrival of the new stadium as motivation for her squad as she enters her fourth year at the helm of the program.

Fink is entering the 2013 season with a large amount of confidence in her team’s player leadership. Senior Julie Tahan is entering her second full season as a captain with the club. The All-Ivy attacker has been using her captaincy experience to help co-captain junior Alex Iqbal in her ascension to leadership, and the duo has been in sync since combining as captains last spring.

The amount of commitment and excitement flowing through the program entering the season was evidenced by the showing of success on the first day of training. Every single member of the squad passed the offseason condition test on the first attempt, allowing the focus to quickly shift to full-team training in preparation for opening weekend.

The Quakers haven’t missed a beat during practice according to Fink, her players making the best of one final stretch of practices scattered around Philadelphia -- thanks to our friends at Temple and Drexel -- while awaiting the completion of Vagelos Field.

The Red and Blue will hit the turf in West Chester, Pa. as they face off with the Golden Rams for a scrimmage on Friday at 5 p.m. The three Penn freshmen and one sophomore transfer will make their debuts with the team, while the squad as a whole looks to continue toward the ultimate goal of an Ivy League title.
