PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania women’s golf team will tee off for the 2013-14 year this weekend, competing in the 54-hole Princeton Invitational in its first tournament action of the year.
The tournament will start at 8 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday; the teams are scheduled to play two rounds on Saturday and a final round on Sunday. The event is taking place at Springdale Golf Club -- just off the Princeton campus -- which will play at par-72 and measure 6,131 yards. In addition to the Quakers, the field includes the host Tigers as well as Ivy programs Columbia and Harvard. Non-Ivy teams include Delaware, Lehigh, St. John’s and Seton Hall.
Penn will run out a lineup that features three newcomers -- Sophia Chen, Isabella Rahm, and Marissa Kay. They will join a pair of veteran players, junior two-time All-Ivy recipient Amanda Chin and senior Olivia Chang. In addition, two more freshmen (Erin Lo and Franchesca de la Torre) will compete in the tournament as individuals.
Despite the youth and relative inexperience at the collegiate level, fifth-year head coach Mark Anderson is looking forward to an exciting year for his team.
“I am excited about our first event of the year,” he said. “This is the deepest team we have ever had, and I expect a strong showing at Princeton. We will have a young team, but they have been very solid over the past couple of weeks. With Amanda and Olivia adding their leadership and experience, we have a very good mix of talent on our team and I know they are capable of great things this season.”
