Volleyball Stays Local for Weekend Tournament

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania volleyball team will travel out to the main line to Big 5 rival Villanova for the annual Villanova Classic tournament, to be held this Friday and Saturday, at the Jake Nevin Field House. The Quakers and host Wildcats will be joined by the Spartans of Norfolk State and the Pioneers of Sacred Heart.

Penn will start the tournament against Norfolk State Friday at 4:30 p.m.; Saturday’s action includes play against Sacred Heart at 1 p.m. and the conclusion of the tournament with Villanova at 7 p.m.

The Red and Blue

Last weekend, Penn (3-4) hosted the Crowne Plaza Philadelphia West Penn Invitational and won two of the three matches played, falling to American 3-0 and defeating both Temple and Weber State in exciting five-set battles. The Quakers’ offensive leaderboard boasts seven athletes in double digits in kills, led by sophomore Jasmine DeSilva with 94 (3.03 k/s). Sohpomores Alex Caldwell (174) and Ronnie Bither (153) lead the team in assists. The Quakers’ defense has seven athletes in double figures in digs, with senior Dani Shepherd topping the board in triple digits with 104 (5.78 d/s). Freshman Arielle Winfield leads with 27 blocks and is followed by Caldwell with 13.

Scouting the Spartans

Norfolk State (4-7) last competed against William & Mary in a non-conference matchup, losing in three. On the top of the leaderboard for NSU is senior Goda Jankauskaite with 97 kills (2.62 k/s). Defensively, redshirt junior Noelle Eagles tops the board with 146 digs (3.84 d/s).

Scouting the Pioneers

Sacred Heart (5-4) played in the Delaware Tournament last weekend and finished with a 1-2 record, winning against Rutgers in five. The Pioneers were defeated by Furman 3-1 and host Delaware 3-0.

The Pioneers are led by two freshmen: Sarah Krufka with 88 kills (3.14 k/s) and Ana Gonzalez with 113 digs (3.90 d/s).

Scouting the Wildcats

Villanova (5-5) played five sets at home against Delaware on Tuesday, winning 3-2. Wildcat sophomore Lauren Carpenter leads the team in kills with 129 (3.22 k/s) and senior Mariah Henley leads the Wildcats in digs with 195 (5.00 d/s).
