PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania men’s golf team is ready to tee off the 2013-14 season. The Quakers are at the second annual Patriot Intercollegiate this weekend, a 54-hole tournament that will see the teams play 36 holes on Saturday and a final 18 on Sunday.

Penn is one of two Ivy League teams in the 11-team field, along with Columbia. George Mason is the host institution. The field also includes Christopher Newport, Delaware, Hofstra, IUP, La Salle, Marshall, Villanova and Wagner. The tournament will take place on the Laurel Hills Golf Course in Lorton, Va.; the course will play at par-71 and measures 6,857 yards.

Penn’s lineup will feature a pair of regulars from a year ago, juniors Austin Powell and Ben Cooley. Another junior, Tomas Agrest, will also be in the lineup along with a pair of freshmen, Matt Kern and Dane Walton. Sophomore Patrick O’Leary will also be in the field, playing as an individual.

“Our team heads to George Mason's event this weekend after enduring a grueling three weeks of qualifying,” said Penn’s second-year head coach, Bob Heintz. “Ben and Austin led the way in qualifying, and we are hoping they continue that solid play in our first fall event. We are without captain Max Marsico, who is recovering from a rib injury suffered late this summer. Rounding out the top five are Tomas a two of the freshmen, Dane and Matt.

“Laurel Hill is an ideal golf course to play during our first tournament because it offers relatively generous fairways and straightforward greens,” he said. “If our guys are feeling some early-season nerves, I think the course will forgive a couple of errors as they settle in. We would like to achieve a strong start to the season before heading to Yale the following week. The main goal in any golf tournament is to win, of course, but we will set individual goals for each player and see how it all adds up on Sunday. I know the team is relieved to be done with qualifying and excited to travel and compete.”
