CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The University of Pennsylvania women’s soccer team took a lead on Harvard thanks to an own goal on Friday evening, but what goes around comes around. After the Crimson tied the match, they won it on another own goal, 2-1.

It was Penn’s first loss of 2013, while Harvard improved to 4-3-1 and won its fourth straight match. The game was the Ivy League opener for both squads.

Penn (4-1-2) took the lead in the 68th minute, when Kerry Scalora sent a ball into the box from the left side. The ball bounced in front of the goal, where a Penn player attempted to head it on but missed it. However, that appeared to confuse one of the Harvard defenders, who attempted to clear it but instead kicked it over goalkeeper Bethany Kanten’s head and into the Crimson goal.

Harvard responded. Off a corner kick, the ball bounced off Alika Keene and over to Karly Zlatic, who sent a shot into the top right corner that tied the score. Peyton Johnson was also credited with an assist on the play.

The Crimson then took the lead just four minutes later when a free kick near midfield from Margaret Purce was accidentally headed into the Quaker goal by a Penn defender.

Harvard outshot Penn, 9-4, and had the only corner kick in the match. The Crimson nearly took the lead early in the match, with a shot that beat Penn goalkeeper Kalijah Terilli; however, senior defender Claire Walker was behind her keeper and kept it out of the net.

Penn is back in action again on Sunday, hosting Lehigh at 2:30 p.m. on Rhodes Field. That match is the second half of a doubleheader at Rhodes, after the Penn men’s soccer team kicks off with Florida International at noon.
