Alanna Shanahan
Position: Deputy Director of Athletics

Alanna W. Shanahan is currently the Deputy Director of Athletics at the University of Pennsylvania and has held that position for a year after holding several other senior administrative positions throughout the Division of Recreation and Intercollegiate Athletics (DRIA) since 1999.

In her current position, Shanahan oversees the administration of 17 of Penn’s 33 varsity intercollegiate programs -- including football and both men’s and women’s basketball -- as well as the external affairs programs (athletic communications, marketing and new media, Nelligan Sports Marketing). That includes a supervisory role in budgeting, recruiting, facilities and operations, development and alumni relations, strength and conditioning, athletic training, compliance, academic services and athletic communications.

In addition to her current position as Deputy AD, Shanahan has been DRIA’s Senior Women’s Administrator since March of 2012, and the Executive Director of the Penn Relays since June 2011.

Shanahan was a Senior Associate Athletic Director from July 2007-June 2012; prior to that, she was an Associate AD for External Affairs starting in July 2004. From July 2001 until 2004, Shanahan was an Assistant AD, and from 1999 to 2004 she also held the title of Executive Assistant to the Athletic Director.

In addition to her many administrative positions over the years, Shanahan also boasts college coaching experience—she was an assistant women’s lacrosse coach at Penn for the 1998 season, then took over as interim head coach for the 1999 campaign.

Among her many duties outside of Penn, Shanahan was appointed to the NCAA Division I Recruiting and Athletics Personnel Issues Cabinet, and she has been the administrative liaison for the Ivy League Women’s Lacrosse Coaches.

A 1996 University of Pennsylvania graduate with a degree in anthropology, Shanahan played lacrosse for the Quakers and was one of the team’s captains and MVP her senior year. A four-year starter, she ended her career with 52 points (41g, 11a).

Shanahan holds a Master of Science degree from Penn in education (Higher Education Administration Division), and is a doctoral candidate in the University’s Graduate School of Education (Higher Education Management Division).

Shanahan and her husband, Kevin, reside in Wallingford, Pa. with their two sons, Frank and Wren.
