New York, N.Y. – The University of Pennsylvania volleyball team fell victim to the squad with home court advantage. Columbia defeated Penn, 3-2 (25-22, 11-25, 25-20, 23-25, 7-15), at tonight's Go Pink Breast Cancer Awareness match.

In the first set, Penn (6-7 overall, 0-2 Ivy) went up 6-2 and almost lost the lead as the Lions (3-8 overall, 1-1 Ivy) were able to close the gap to tie it at six. The Red and Blue pushed ahead and were able to keep Columbia at bay long enough to win, 25-22. The Quakers started off on the right foot in the first set, hitting a .342 attack percentage and only committing two errors.

However, the second set was a stark contrast. With only five kills and 11 errors, Penn finished the set with a -.182 percentage. This allowed the Lions to strike as they set the tone early with a score of 8-2. The Quakers tacked on five points, but Columbia powered ahead and shut down the Red and Blue, 25-11.

Even at one a piece, Penn took the lead in set three, 3-2, and would stay in control the rest of the set, winning 25-20. The Quakers were up 2-1 and needed one final set win for the match victory.

The Red and Blue gained the lead, 6-3, and battled to take the match away from the home team, who was trying to stay alive. The Lions gained momentum halfway through the match with a nine point run, capturing the lead, 14-11. Columbia refused to give up and prevailed 25-23.

The home team kept the momentum going to seal the deal in the fifth set. The Quakers began with a 6-2 disadvantage and were unsuccessful in keeping up with Columbia, falling 15-7.

Senior captain Dani Shepherd anchored the defense with 27 digs, and sophomore Alexis Genske had 15. Offensively, senior captain Kristen Etterbeek led with 10 kills, followed by sophomore Alex Caldwell (9).

The Red and Blue will remain in New York to take on the Big Red tomorrow at 5 p.m.
