Men's Golf Ties For Eighth at Yale

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The University of Pennsylvania men's golf team tied for eighth place out of 14 teams at the Macdonald Cup, hosted by Yale at the par-70 Yale Golf Course.

Penn shot 297-284-296--877 for the weekend and tied with Central Connecticut State. Illinois, the NCAA runner-up a year ago, easily won the team title; the Illini shot 269-270-268--807 to finish 33-under-par and bested second-place Yale (832) by 25 strokes. Among the other Ivy League teams in the field, Dartmouth (863) was sixth, Cornell (883) was 10th and Brown (886) was 11th.

Individually, freshman Dane Walton was Penn's low scorer; he carded 73-71-70--214 to finish at 4-over-par and tied for 18th overall. Ben Cooley (72-70-74--216) tied for 24th, while Austin Powell (77-70-76--223) tied for 45th. Freshman Matt Kern (75-73-76--224) tied for 49th, while sophomore Patrick O'Leary (79-78-85--242) was 70th overall.

Illinois' Brian Campbell shot 64-67-66--197 to finish at 13-under-par and win medalist honors in the 72-player field. Hartford's Evan Russell was a distant second, at 201.

Penn returns to action next weekend at the Temple Invitational; that event will take place at Philmont Country Club.
