Women's Tennis Finishes Run at ITA Regional

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The University of Pennsylvania women’s tennis team completed play at the USTA/ITA Northeast Regional Championships on Monday. The event was hosted by Harvard at the Murr Center.

Penn junior Sol Eskenazi was the Regional’s top seed in singles, and advanced further than any of her teammates. After a first-round bye, she defeated Arielle Griffin of UMass (6-2, 6-3) in the second round, then rebounded well from a slow start to defeat Columbia’s Tina Jiang in the Round of 16 (0-6, 7-6[3], 6-4). However, in the quarterfinal round Eskenazi fell to Brown’s Dayna Lord who was seeded in the 9-16 slots (6-3, 6-2).

Sonya Latycheva was among the eight women seeded 17-24, but after a first-round bye she lost to Cornell’s Marika Cusick (7-5, 6-4). Luba Vazhnenia also fell in the second round after a first-round bye, to Harvard’s Amy He (6-1, 2-6, 6-2).

Kana Daniel played a first-round match and defeated Princeton’s Caroline Joyce (6-2, 6-4). In the second round, she was paired with the tournament’s fifth seed, Yale’s Annie Sullivan, and lost (6-1, 6-0).

Jaime Yapp-Shing and Stephanie Do were unable to get out of the qualifying draw in singles. Yapp-Shing was the top seed in the Qualifying Draw,but fell to Quinnipiac’s Jacqueline Raynor in the first round, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2. Do, meanwhile, fell to Eva Sung of Army, 6-7(3), 6-3, 6-3.

In doubles, Eskenazi and Yapp-Shing began the Regional as the No. 2 seed, and defeated Yale’s Yu and Lynch, 8-2. In the second round, they had even less trouble with Army’s Ilev and Pitman, 8-1. However, in the Round of 16 they fell to the No. 10 seeded pair from Columbia, Jiang and Leung, 8-6.

Latycheva and Daniel also were paired. They defeated the 12th-seeded pair from Quinnipiac, Dzulynsky and Jacqueline Raynor, 8-3, but in the second round they fell to Army’s Paul and Keller, 8-5.

Alex Ion and Do defeated Binghamton’s Dimuro and Brodsky, 8-3, but in the second round they were paired against the top seed from Columbia, Sanon and Vaidya. The Lions duo took the Quakers, 8-2.
