PHILADELPHIA - Freshman forward Jasmine Cole has been having a spectacular season for the University of Pennsylvania's field hockey team, and her exploits have not gone unnoticed. This week, her name and face have gone national as she is one of six athletes featured in Sports Illustrated's "Faces In The Crowd" section.
Cole entered this past week leading the nation in goals per game and was fourth in points per game. She has had two hat tricks this season, against Saint Joseph's and Cornell, and she also had two-goal games against Rider and Columbia. With Cole leading the way, Penn has already shattered the program record for goals in a season, scoring 52 with two games still to play. (The previous record was 42.)
As a team, Penn is 12-3, the program's best mark since the 2004 team went 13-4 and won a share of the Ivy League championship. The Quakers have two Ivy League games left, the first coming this Saturday when they are at Brown for a noon faceoff. If Penn beats the Bears, the Red and Blue are guaranteed to have their game with Princeton next Saturday be for the Ivy title and accompanying postseason bid.
