Men's Swimming Fairs Well in First Ivy Tri-Meet

ITHACA, N.Y. – In the first Ivy tri-meet of the 2013-14 season, the University of Pennsylvania men’s swimming and diving team defeated host Cornell, 187-113, but fell to Princeton, 172-123, in Teagle Pool. The Quakers won five of the weekend’s 16 events, whereas the Tigers claimed nine and the Big Red won the remaining two. The Red and Blue are 2-2 overall and 2-1 in the Ivy League.

The first win for Penn came in the 100 yard breaststroke, where the team also took the second place finish. Sophomore Kyle Yu (57:26) came in first with freshman Cole Hurwitz right behind (57.46). Hurwitz also captured first place in the 200 breast (2:05.00).

Fellow sophomore Eric Schultz brought in the second first place victory for the Quakers, with a time of 45:87 in the 100 free.

Senior captain Rhoads Worster was the only swimmer to break 50 seconds in the 100 fly with his first place time of 49.69. Worster, Schultz, junior Alex Porter, and junior Dillon McHugh won the final event, 400 free relay, and finished 8.83 seconds ahead of second place Cornell ‘A’ team with a time of 3:02.15.

The Red and Blue hit the pool again after the Thanksgiving holiday, December 5-7, when they compete in the Total Performance Invitational in Gambier, Ohio.
