Women Swimming Battles and Defeats Bears, 172-126

PHILADELPHIA – In front of a packed house, it really was home sweet home for the University of Pennsylvania women's swimming team which defeated Brown in Sheerr Pool on Saturday afternoon. The Red and Blue won 172-126.

The Quakers' first event win came in the 1 meter dive. Freshman Sivan Mills completed the event with 262.13 points. Fellow freshman Cassidy Golden and Bear Rachel Speakman tied for second with a score of 249.15. The freshman pair also took first and second in the 3 meter dive -- Golden took first with a final score of 258.97 and Mills took second with a score of 254.47.

After the first round of diving, the women got in the pool for the 200 medley relay. The “A team” – junior Lauryn Brown, freshman Haley Wickham, sophomore Lauren Church, freshman Rochelle Dong – added 11 team points with their first place finish at 1:44.58. The “B team” – sophomore Emily Baturka, sophomore Catherine Yee, junior Taylor Sneed, junior Irene Katopodis – put up an additional two points with their third place finish at 1:47.50.

First, third, and fourth places finishes in the 1000 free were led by senior Shelby Fortin. Fortin touched the wall at 10:10.14, giving the Red and Blue another nine points. Sophomore Annie McCotter and senior Kristi Edleson finished in third and fourth at 10:26.94 and 10:39.08, respectively.

Fortin took a second victory, finishing the 100 free in 52 seconds flat.

The 100 back saw three consecutive finishes for Penn starting with Church, who finished the heat with a time of 56.19. Brown and Sneed were right behind finishing in second and third, respectively.

Church again led the top three finishers, this time in the 200 back at 2:04.75. Brown (2:07.53) and freshman Madeleine Jardeleza were the next two to finish, giving the Red and Blue a total of 16 team points in the event.

Dong led the way in the 50 free, completing the heat at 23.77 and junior Christina Hurley touched right after, adding four team points with her time of 24.01.

The Quakers swam an exhibition heat in the final event, the 400 free relay, and the “A-team” – Dong, Hurley, Church, Fortin – completed the race at 3:30.92.

The Red and Blue will be back in action tomorrow when they host Harvard at 11 a.m.
