Men Swimming Battles and Defeats Bears, 179-116

PHILADELPHIA – In front of a packed house, it really was home sweet home for the University of Pennsylvania men's swimming team which defeated Brown in Sheerr Pool on Saturday afternoon. The Red and Blue won 179-116.

The men tallied their first of 11 event wins in the 3 meter dive. Freshman Jack Stein finished with a total score of 313.35 and senior Will Hartje took third with 292.80. Stein and Hartje later totaled 13 team points in the 1 meter dive with a one-two finish, respectively.

Not including diving, the men took a one-two finish in five events. The first event to have two Quakers finish back-to-back was the 200 medley relay. The “A team” – freshman Phillip Hu, sophomore Kyle Yu, senior Rhoads Worster, sophomore Eric Schultz – finished at 1:29.94, which broke the pool record (1:30.09).

Following the “A team” was sophomore Chris Swanson and freshman Wes Thomas, who tacked on another 13 points after swimming in the 1000 free. Swanson completed the heat at 9:23.56, and Thomas finished next at 9:33.61.

Three other duos took a first and second place finish in an event -- Schultz and junior Dillon McHugh in the 100 free, Yu and freshman Cole Hurwitz in the 200 breast, Worster and freshman Jimmy Jameson in the 100 fly.

Nine Quakers also took the top three places in the 100 back (Worster, Hu, McHugh), the 100 breast (Yu, sophomore Bobby Francis, Hurwitz), and the200 back (sophomore Brian Foley, freshman Grant Proctor, Hu).

Schultz had an additional first place finish in the 50 free with a time of 20.76.

The 400 free relay “A team” – junior Alex Porter, McHugh, Worster, Schultz – finished the meet off by breaking another Sheerr Pool record (3:01.75), swimming the event as an exhibition heat with a time of 3:01.13.

Penn will be back in action in Sheerr Pool when the Quakers host West Chester on Friday, January 31.
