PHILADELPHIA –
The University of Pennsylvania women’s tennis team will play on back-to-back days for the first time in 2014, this Friday against neighboring Drexel at 2 p.m. and Saturday versus Maryland at 2 p.m., both in the Levy Tennis Pavilion.

Penn (0-1) is coming off its first match of the spring season that saw the Quakers fall to Old Dominion, 4-3. Penn was unable to win a doubles match and competed without two of its starters in singles. The Quakers were able to get singles wins from Sol Eskenazi, Kana Daniel and Jaime Yapp-Shing, competing in the top-three positions. In the sixth-position, Brigitte Desnoes was able to force a third match, before falling, 11-9.

Drexel
Penn will play Drexel (3-0) for just the ninth time overall, with the Quakers winning the previous eight meetings.

The neighbor schools have played intermittently in the past, beginning in 1973-1975, before resuming the series again in 2000. The Quakers and the Dragons then met up again in 2001 before squaring off in 2010 and 2011. The most recent time the two schools have met was in 2012, with Penn winning the match convincingly, 7-0.

Drexel has opened the season with a win against Rider (7-0) in October, and more recently, wins against Monmouth (7-0) at home, and at Lehigh (5-2).
