PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania men’s squash team proved once again that it’s depth through the ladder is its greatest strength, as the eighth-ranked Quakers defeated No. 11 Columbia, 5-4 Sunday evening in Ringe Courts.

Freshman George Lemmon’s 3-0 win in the seventh-position was the clincher for Penn (8-4, 4-3 Ivy). With the victory against the Lions (6-6, 2-5 Ivy), the Quakers have put themselves in position to play in the Potter Cup for the first time since 2009.

On Sunday, Penn dropped matches No. 1-4 in the ladder, but their depth once again proved to be the difference.

Juniors Michael Mutscheller and Jack Maine were able to pull out five-game victories to give the Quakers their first two victories.

Playing in his last home regular season match, senior co-captain John Dudzik won three straight games (11-5, 11-8, 11-5) to lead Penn’s comeback.

Freshman Rahil Fazelbhoy won 3-1, to make it 4-3 in favor of the Quakers before the last set of matches.

After Lemmon’s clincher, senior Derek Chilvers was fighting to win his last regular season match, but fell in a fifth and deciding game, 11-8.

Penn will prepare for its postseason during the week before heading to Boston to play in the CSA Championships, Feb. 14-16.
