PHILADELPHIA - It was a good start to the spring season for the University of Pennsylvania women's rowing team, which swept George Washington and Saint Joseph's in four races Saturday on the Schuylkill River.
The teams raced in conditions that started in rolling swells and significant chop, but got better as the day progressed.
In the first varsity 8 race, Penn easily swept to victory, covering the 2,000-meter course in 7:01.30. George Washington was second, in 7:19.73, while Saint Joseph's was third in 7:31.75.
In the second varsity 8 race, Penn's time of 7:05.76 was well ahead of SJU (7:16.24) and GW (7:30.20).
In the varsity 4 race, Penn's A boat took first in 7:45.00 while the Quakers' B boat was second in 7:46.59. George Washington was third, in 8:11.80, while Saint Joseph's was fourth in 8:36.64.
In the final race, an eights race, Penn's third varsity took first place in 7:11.70 while the Quakers' fourth varsity was second in 7:19.82. SJU was third in 7:30.11, while GW was fourth in 7:38.77.
Penn returns to action next Saturday, entering its Cup season competition with the Connell Cup. The annual races will take place this year at Yale and feature the Quakers, the Bulldogs, and Columbia.
