PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania women’s rowing team had a solid showing in its first Cup races of the spring last Saturday, falling to No. 7 Yale but defeating Columbia in every race. This weekend, the Quakers will compete in a pair of races on the Charles River in Boston.

The morning races will be for the Orange Challenge Cup and pit Penn against host Northeastern as well as Syracuse. After a two-year hold on the Orange Challenge Cup, Penn took second in last year’s Varsity 8 race to Syracuse. The Orange enter this weekend’s races ranked 18th in the latest national poll, while Penn is second among teams receiving votes. The Orange Challenge Cup has been contested in some variation among these three schools every year since 1981, with the exception of 1994.

“The Orange Challenge Cup is always one of my favorite races of our spring season,” said head coach Mike Lane. “All three teams come out extremely competitive, and it makes for exciting racing. Although we lost the cup last spring, we are on a mission to win it back on Saturday. We made some adjustments from last weekend’s Connell Cup races, and we will be able to put those to the test.”

The afternoon races will pit the Quakers against Boston College and Buffalo.

“Racing twice on Saturday gives us a great opportunity to make adjustments from the morning to the afternoon,” said Lane. “It also gives us another opportunity for a morning/afternoon schedule, which will better prepare us for the Clemson Invitational, and ultimately the Ivy Championships.”
