CLEMSON, S.C. - On a race day shortened by poor racing weather in the afternoon, the University of Pennsylvania women's rowing team completed the first day of racing at the Clemson Invite. The teams will now race twice on Sunday morning.

The Quakers had boats in six races on Saturday morning, with five of them pitting the team against Cornell in the annual battle for the Class of '89 Plaque. The Big Red took the plaque again this year, besting Penn in three of the five races (1V8, 2V8, V4A).

In the varsity 8 race, Penn placed sixth out of seven teams in its heat, clocking 7:24.1 over the 2,000-meter course. Cornell was second in the heat.

Penn's second varsity 8 was fifth out of seven in its race Saturday morning with a time of 7:47.5. Cornell was just ahead of the Quakers, in fourth place.

In the varsity 4 race, Penn's time of 8:58.8 was good for fifth out of seven boats in the heat. Cornell again finished just ahead of the Quakers, in fourth place.

Penn's third varsity 8 enjoyed a solid showing in its race, placing second behind only Michigan State in a six-boat race. The Quakers' time was 7:54.9, well ahead of the rest of the field (including Cornell).

In the varsity 4 B race, Penn's B boat took second place out of six with a time of 8:55.4. Among the boats to finish behind the Quakers was Cornell, which took third. In another heat, Penn's C boat was fifth out of seven with a time of 9:21.9.
