MERCER, N.J. – Penn navigated Day One of the 2014 IRA Regatta, and will send all five boats on to Saturday’s competition.

Penn sent its Second Varsity Eight to the semifinals after a dominating win in its repechage Friday afternoon. The 2V beat Syracuse to the stripe by 2.561 seconds to win the winner-take-all repechage and snag a spot in Saturday’s A/B semifinals where the Quakers can earn a spot in the Grand Final. Regardless of the result, Penn’s 2V will finishin the top-12, well ahead of its No. 15 seed entering the regatta.

A 2000m race came down to the final centimeters for the Third Varsity in its repechage, Penn’s reaching the line just before Wisconsin by a margin of 0.093 seconds for third place. That finish was vital as only three of the six boats in the rep would move on to the A/B semifinals. No. 14 Penn charged out early and made a move on eventual winner No. 8 Cornell, and that push was enough to create space ahead of No. 10 Wisconsin that the Badgers couldn’t overcome.

The Varsity Eight is seeded No. 14 at the regatta and took fourth in its morning heat, finishing behind No. 3 Harvard, No. 6 Northeastern and No. 11 Columbia. The Quakers had to hold off No. 22 Drexel which put forth a challenge late, but Penn held bragging rights in University City for time being with a 1.5340-second edge over the Dragons.

In the afternoon’s repechage, Penn needed to cross the line first to move on to the A/B semifinals and maintain a chance at the Grand Final. The Quakers gave No. 9 Cornell all the Big Red could handle, but finished second in a time of 5:39.414. Penn knocked almost 15 seconds off of its time from the morning heats – and its second-place time in the first repechage race would have won two of the other three rep races, but Penn fell victim to the numbers game and will row in Saturday’s C/D semifinals for a shot at the Third Final.

The Frosh Eight finished fourth in its morning heat, the only race of the day for the novices. They will row Saturday morning in the second repechage, needing to finish first or second to advance to the Grand Final.

Penn’s Varsity Four was fifth in the morning, and then took fourth in its afternoon repechage. The Quakers needed a third place or better finish to move on to the semifinals, and thus will row next in Sunday’s Third Final.

Penn will first be on the water Saturday in the Frosh Eight repechage at 9:45 a.m. The Third Varsity will row for a spot in the Grand Final at 10:15, followed by the Second Varsity at 10:45. Rounding out Saturday’s rowing will be the Varsity Eight at 11:45 a.m.
