PHILADELPHIA - At the University of Pennsylvania football team's eighth annual Iron Quaker, freshman fullback Tyrone Quarterman claimed the overall Iron Quaker title. As is tradition, the competition took place just prior to the start of the spring season and concluded the team's offseason strength and conditioning program.

Quarterman lifted 365 lbs., 375 lbs., and 540 lbs. in the clean, bench, and squat competitions, respectively. In total, the freshman’s efforts added to 1,280 lbs. While he won the highest squat weight outright, he tied for the best clean with sophomore defensive end Tyler Drake

Freshman Solo Ceesay and sophomore Dan Lysenko tied for best score on the bench, both recording an impressive 395 lbs. In terms of speed and agility testing, sophomore defensive back Kenny Thomas earned fastest time in the 40-yard dash with a 4.44 second run. Spencer Kulcsar, a junior running back, earned the fastest pro-agility score for the second year in a row. Senior defensive back Evan Jackson titled outright for best vertical jump (39.3) and shared the title for best broad jump with Thomas (10 feet, 3 inches).

The Iron Quaker is awarded to the player with the highest index score. This score is the cumulative tally of several lifts, namely the clean, squat and bench press. This number is then multiplied by a constant, which is assigned to a player based on body weight. This allows the coaching staff to compensate for size differences among the players and enables them to more accurately determine an overall winner.

In 2007, the Penn Football coaching staff created the Iron Quaker competition as a finale to the team's off-season conditioning. The events are designed to test and showcase the squad’s all-around athletic abilities—strength in the weight room and speed and agility on the field.  Awards are given in individual categories, such as cleans, benches, squats, jumps, pro agility and the 40-yard dash.  In addition, there is an overall title to be claimed.  Held in the George A. Weiss Pavilion’s weight room, the Iron Quaker competition serves as a display 2014 squad’s hard work and preparations for this upcoming season.

Penn's 2014 Red vs. Blue spring game is set for Saturday, April 5 at 4 p.m., and is open to the public at Franklin Field.
