PHILADELPHIA - Linebacker Dan Davis, safety Evan Jackson, tight end Mitch King and wide receiver Conner Scott were selected to serve as team captains for the 2014 University of Pennsylvania football team. Selected by their teammates, the senior foursome has combined for four All-Ivy honors and six Ivy League championship rings.
"This is a great balance of personalities and four good selections by our players," said head coach Al Bagnoli, who is entering his 23rd season and is the active career wins leader in the FCS. "This is the ideal mixture of vocal leaders and those who lead by example. They all have the intangibles. They work hard, do things the right way and command respect."
Davis started all 10 games last season and led the Quakers with 64 tackles en route to All-Ivy accolades. He also led the team and finished fifth in the Ivy League with 10.5 tackles for loss. He has played in all but two games since stepping on campus and was a first-team All-Ivy selection for the Ivy League champions as a sophomore.
Jackson and Scott are each set to return for a fifth season. Jackson, who was named second-team All-Ivy last season, missed one game to injury and still finished second on the team with 59 tackles. He was among the top 10 in the Ivy League with seven passes defended (seventh) and two interceptions (eighth). Scott was limited to seven games last and missed all of 2011 due to injury, but still ranks ninth all-time at Penn with 100 career receptions and is 10th in school history with 1,255 yards. He earned second-team All-Ivy status as a sophomore and led the Quakers in receiving last season.
King has played in all but one game over the past two seasons, which includes all 10 during the 2012 Ivy League championship season. He has pulled in 11 receptions for 148 yards and two touchdowns over the last two years and has been an intregal blocker for a Penn running game that consistently ranks among the top of the Ivy League.
Penn will continue its quest for a league-record 17th Ivy title with preseason practice in August and the season opener at Jacksonville on Sept. 20.
