PHILADELPHIA - Former University of Pennsylvania linebacker Joey Grosso C'14, passed away from a diving accident on Wednesday at the age of 22.
Grosso, who graduated from the College of Arts and Sciences in May, was a three-year letterwinner for the Quakers and played in every game over the last three seasons. He was a member of the 2010 and 2012 Ivy League championship teams and finished his career with 43 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, a fumble recovery and an interception in 31 career games.
"The entire Penn football family is saddened by the tragic news of Joey's passing," said head coach Al Bagnoli. "Joey was a terrific young man, an accomplished student and an outstanding player. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his entire family during this very difficult period."
The Lighthouse Point, Fla., native was recently accepted to law school at the University of Miami. Prior to Penn, he was a two-sport athlete at Pope John Paul II High School where he earned first-team all-state honors in football as a senior.
Grosso's viewing is scheduled for 5-9 p.m. on Friday at Fred Hunters Funeral Home in Grosso's hometown of Lighthouse Point, Fla. The funeral and mass will take place at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Deerfield Beach, Fla., beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
