PHILADELPHIA - Destination: College Park.
Six days after the University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team earned the program's first Ivy League title in a decade, the NCAA Tournament brackets were officially announced. The Quakers earned a No. 12 seed in the Louisville Regional -- the highest seed in program history -- and will play the University of Texas in a neutral-site game at the University of Maryland's Comcast Center.
Penn and Texas -- the No. 5 seed, out of the Big 12 Conference -- will meet on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m., in a game that will be televised live on ESPN. The other two teams in that four-team pod include the host and No. 4 seed, Maryland, facing off against the 13th seed, Patriot League champion Army. Tthe winners of Sunday's games will square off Tuesday in College Park.
Tickets for Penn's NCAA Tournament first-round game can be purchased through the Penn Athletics ticket office at 215-898-6151. Office hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. All tickets will be held at Will Call at the host site.
This will be Penn's first meeting with Texas. The Quakers have played Maryland twice in program history, but not since the 1977-78 season. Penn and Army have met seven times previous, including a 67-57 Quakers victory earlier this season, on December 11.
In Penn's two previous trips to the NCAA Tournament, the Quakers were a No. 15 seed. In 2001, the Red and Blue fell to Texas Tech, 100-57, in Lubbock, Texas. Three years later, the Quakers lost to second-seeded UConn, 91-55, in Bridgeport, Conn. Last season, the Quakers earned the first two postseason wins in program history in reaching the semifinals of the Women's Basketball Invitational.
Penn clinched its first Ivy League title and NCAA Tournament berth since 2003-04 last Tuesday with an 80-64 win at Princeton. The Quakers (22-6, 12-2 Ivy) tied a school record for wins in a season and earned the outright championship with the second-best league mark in program history. The Quakers have also matched the best two-year stretch in school history with 40 wins (1999-01), and have earned back-to-back postseason appearances for the first time.
Penn students -- be sure to check the Penn Athletics website on Tuesday, March 18th for more information on a potential bus trip to the game!
